Deep Tissue Massage in Lower Sackville
Some tension sits deeper than a relaxation massage can reach. Deep tissue massage works into the lower layers of muscle and connective tissue to release the tightness behind stiff shoulders, aching low backs and legs that never quite recover from training. Our registered massage therapists work at a pressure that suits you, and they check in as they go, because effective does not have to mean unbearable.
What deep tissue massage is
Deep tissue massage uses slower strokes and firmer, more focused pressure than a relaxation massage. Rather than working broadly across the body, your therapist spends time on the specific areas that are restricted, working through layers of muscle and fascia to release adhesions and restore normal movement.
It is a good fit if you carry chronic tension, train hard, sit at a desk all day, or have had a massage before and found it pleasant but not quite enough.
What deep tissue massage can help with
- Chronic neck, shoulder and upper back tightness
- Low back pain and hip tension
- Postural strain from desk work and driving
- Sports recovery and heavy training loads
- Muscle tightness that keeps returning between treatments
- Restricted range of motion from scar tissue or old injuries
- Tension headaches linked to neck and shoulder muscles
What to expect at your appointment
Your therapist starts with a short conversation about what is bothering you, your health history and what you want out of the session. From there they build the treatment around those areas rather than following a set routine.
Pressure is a conversation, not a test. Deep tissue should feel like productive, tolerable pressure, never something you have to brace through, and you can ask your therapist to ease off at any point. Some people feel a bit tender for a day afterward, which is normal. Drinking water and moving gently helps.
Deep tissue massage at Radius is provided by our registered massage therapists. Chloé Hemenway works with fascia-focused techniques and therapeutic cupping, and has a particular interest in chronic tension through the neck and upper body.
There is no separate deep tissue appointment to book. Book a 30, 60 or 90 minute massage and ask for deep tissue work when you arrive.
Appointments and pricing
- 30 minute massage: $75
- 60 minute massage: $110
- 90 minute massage: $145
Not sure which to book? Sixty minutes is the better choice if you want more than one area addressed properly. Thirty works well for focused maintenance on a single trouble spot. Ninety gives you room to work through several areas without rushing any of them.
Coverage and billing
Massage therapy with a registered massage therapist is covered under most extended health plans in Nova Scotia, and no referral is needed to book. We direct bill most insurance companies, so in most cases you pay only your portion at the end of the appointment. If you are unsure what your plan covers, call us and we will help you check before you book.
Why book deep tissue massage at Radius
A lot of tightness is a symptom of something else: how you move, how you sit, an old injury that never fully rehabbed. Because our massage therapists work alongside physiotherapists and an acupuncturist under one roof, we can look at the whole picture and combine treatments when that gets you further. If your therapist thinks physiotherapy would help the underlying cause, they will say so.
Common questions
Is deep tissue massage supposed to hurt? No. It should feel like firm, productive pressure that you can breathe through. Tell your therapist if it is too much and they will adjust.
What is the difference between deep tissue and a regular massage? Pressure and focus. A relaxation massage works broadly and lightly. Deep tissue works slower and deeper into the specific areas that are restricted.
Do I need a referral? No. You can book directly with one of our registered massage therapists.
How often should I come in? It depends on the problem. Your therapist will give you an honest recommendation rather than a package you do not need.
